Understanding and Using DISA

Cannon VoIP3 min read

DISA — Direct Inward System Access — lets you dial into your Cannon VoIP phone system from any outside phone and then use it as though you were sitting at your desk. That means you can place outbound calls that show your office Caller ID and check your voicemail remotely, from a cell phone, a hotel room, or any line you happen to be near.

How DISA works

Once you dial in and verify your identity with a PIN, the system hands you a secondary dial tone — you're now effectively on your office phone system. From that secondary dial tone you can place external calls or enter internal Feature Access Codes (FACs), such as the code to reach your voicemail.

DISA is protected by a PIN because it gives an outside caller access to your system. Your DISA access details and PIN are provided by Cannon VoIP — contact us if you need them.

Making an outbound call with DISA

1
Dial your main company phone number
From any outside phone, call your business's main number.
2
Press 9 when the Virtual Receptionist answers
During the auto-attendant greeting, press 9 to reach DISA.
3
Enter your DISA PIN
Type your assigned PIN when prompted to verify your identity.
4
Enter the number you want to call
Once verified, you'll get the secondary dial tone — dial your destination number.
5
Press # to place the call
The system connects your call — and the person you're calling sees your office Caller ID.

Checking voicemail remotely

1
Dial in and press 9
Call your company number and press 9 during the greeting.
2
Enter your DISA PIN
Verify your identity to reach the secondary dial tone.
3
Enter the Voicemail Feature Access Code + your extension, then #
The default Voicemail FAC is *57. For example, to reach extension 101, enter *57101#
4
Enter your voicemail PIN, then #
Enter your 4–6 digit voicemail PIN followed by #.
5
Follow the prompts
Listen to, save, or delete messages just like you would at your desk.

Security best practices

Treat your DISA PIN like a bank PIN. Because DISA can place outbound calls on your account, an exposed PIN could lead to fraudulent long-distance charges.

  • Use a complex, unique PIN — avoid obvious sequences.
  • Never share it, and don't write it somewhere easy to find.
  • If you think it's been compromised, contact us right away to change it.
